The Life and Opinions of Tristram Shandy by Laurence Sterne
Although I haven't yet read the whole of this 18th century blockbuster, I felt I should lose no time in recommending it, the first stream-of-consciousness novel in the history of English fiction. To put it mildly, it is a remarkable work. Humorous, bawdy, digressive beyond belief, and full to the brim with vitality and sheer joie de vivre.
