Shy Creatures |
Based on a true story, a mute thirty year old man , hidden from the world for decades, is admitted to a mental hospital. Here an art therapist begins to help him re enter society. She becomes entangled in his life as with a series of flashbacks the mysterious and tragic secrets of his past unfold. The writing is warm and compassionate, portraying love , loneliness and the extraordinary ways in which lives are shaped. (Sue Pratt - bwl 117 Summer 2025) |

Small Pleasures |
Wonderful, witty, beautiful, glorious, miraculous, effortless to read, quietly compelling, stunning, dazzling, a gut punch ending - just some of the quotes on the cover - not to mention it being longlisted for the Women's Prize. The majority of my book group agreed but help! it did absolutely nothing for me. "Quod ali cibus est aliis fuat acre venenum" - as Lucretius remarked or in plain English - one man's meat . . . just proves how subjective reading is. (Jenny Baker - bwl 102 Autumn 2021) |
